New syllabus
The NSW Mathematics syllabus (2024) and the first HSC in 2027
NSW is between two mathematics syllabuses. The Stage 6 syllabus published in 2017 is the one examined in the HSC today. The NSW Mathematics 11–12 syllabus published in 2024 is taught in Year 11 from Term 1 of the year before its first HSC, and that first HSC is in 2027. For a maths department this means two cohorts in the building studying different syllabuses at the same time, and assessment material that must not be mixed between them.
This page sets out, without embellishment, what Andrew HSC's own data says about the 2024 syllabus, which content the product serves today, what a teacher writing a new-syllabus assessment can and cannot do with it now, and how the migration will be made.
Two syllabuses, kept apart by design
Andrew's question bank carries a syllabus registry with two entries, and the product treats them as different things that must never be conflated:
| Registry entry | SYL-2017 | SYL-2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Name | NESA Stage 6 Mathematics (2017) | NSW Mathematics 11–12 (2024) |
| Status | Current: taught since 2019, examined in the HSC today | Future: first HSC in 2027 |
| Topics listed | 49 topics across the four courses (codes MA-, ME-, MEX-, MS-) | 10 topics, Mathematics Standard 2 Year 12 only (codes MST-12-S2-nn) |
| Served to students | Yes: every quiz, worksheet and paper today | No: the bank's 2024-syllabus rows are unpublished drafts held for review, and none is served |
Every question in the bank records which syllabus it was written for, and, where its topic has been resolved against the registry, a topic identifier that is unique across both syllabuses. Which syllabus a student or a class is served is enforced on the server, not hidden in the interface, so a student examined on the 2017 syllabus cannot be shown 2027 content even by a direct request. Content that is identical under both syllabuses can be marked cross-syllabus and then carries no syllabus label at all; everything else is exclusive to the syllabus it was written for. The default is exclusive, because the expensive mistake is serving a cohort material it never studied, and the cheap one is serving a few questions fewer.
What the registry says about the 2024 syllabus today
Honesty about scope matters more on this page than anywhere else on the site. Andrew's registry lists the 2024 syllabus for one course only, Mathematics Standard 2, and only its Year 12 topics. Dot points have not been transcribed for them, so the table below carries names and codes and nothing more. The 2024 Advanced, Extension 1 and Extension 2 topic lists are not in the registry yet.
| Code | Topic |
|---|---|
| MST-12-S2-01 | Algebraic relationships |
| MST-12-S2-02 | Investment and loans |
| MST-12-S2-03 | Annuities |
| MST-12-S2-04 | Trigonometry |
| MST-12-S2-05 | Ratios and rates |
| MST-12-S2-06 | Network flow |
| MST-12-S2-07 | Critical path analysis |
| MST-12-S2-08 | Bivariate data analysis |
| MST-12-S2-09 | Relative frequency and probability |
| MST-12-S2-10 | The normal distribution |
Alongside the registry, Andrew keeps a topic-level overlap map between the two syllabuses. A pair of topics marked as the same means their content and requirements match and questions on either side can be marked cross-syllabus; a pair marked partial means the topics correspond but content was merged, widened or moved, as when the 2017 topic Non-right-angled Trigonometry maps onto the broader 2024 topic Trigonometry, and those questions keep their syllabus label. Every pair in that map was produced by matching topic names against the 2024 Year 12 Standard 2 structure and has not yet been checked dot point by dot point against the official documents, so the product treats it as a report, not as permission to reclassify questions.
For the other courses the repo records the changes it expects, drawn from the published 2024 documents and to be confirmed against them topic by topic at migration: Extension 2 regains the cross product, equations of planes, second-order differential equations and shell-method volumes; the common questions shared between the Standard 2 and Advanced papers are removed; and content moves between Advanced and the Extension courses, with minor additions, exclusions and relocations throughout. The official syllabus documents are published by NESA at curriculum.nsw.edu.au, and they, not this page, are the authority on what the 2024 syllabus contains.
The product decision: stay on the 2017 syllabus until its last HSC
All generation, scope enforcement and student practice in Andrew HSC run on the 2017 syllabus, and will until the last cohort examined on it has sat its HSC. The migration to the 2024 syllabuses for the 2027 cohort then happens as one deliberate switch, following a written playbook, rather than as a series of small corrections. The repo's own warning is that the 2024 syllabus re-adds content the 2017 data deliberately marks as beyond the course, and that putting individual items back piecemeal would leave the syllabus data, the runtime scope guard and the generation prompts disagreeing with each other.
The switch covers, in order: the single active-syllabus constant, which a test guards against being flipped as a side effect of other work; the syllabus data for all four courses, with new identifiers for any topic whose content changes meaning; the scope guard that decides what counts as beyond the course; the generation guidance for the harder presets; the hard-coded topic lists in the pickers; the textbook mapping; the tests and the frozen evaluation set; and finally a scope audit and reclassification of the existing bank under the new boundaries. There is one accepted limitation until then: a Year 11 class already studying the 2024 syllabus is served 2017-syllabus content.
Writing a new-syllabus assessment with Andrew today
What you can do
- Generate examinations and worksheets on the 2017 syllabus for every course, which remains the right material for every student sitting the HSC before 2027. The Standard 2, Advanced, Extension 1 and Extension 2 pages describe the paper each course produces.
- Use 2017-syllabus questions for a Year 11 class on the 2024 syllabus where the topic's content is unchanged, checking the chosen questions against the official 2024 document yourself. Annuities, critical path analysis and the normal distribution appear in both Standard 2 topic lists by name, but the overlap map is not yet verified, so the check is the teacher's.
- Browse the question bank by area of study and difficulty, and assemble a worksheet by hand when a generated paper would draw on content you know has moved.
What you cannot do yet
- Select 2024 topic codes for Advanced, Extension 1 or Extension 2: the registry does not carry them.
- Generate questions on content the 2024 syllabus restores, such as the cross product, equations of planes, second-order differential equations or shell-method volumes: the scope guard treats them as beyond the current course on purpose, and will until the switch.
- See 2024-labelled sample questions on this site: none exist, and none will be invented to fill the gap.
Teachers remain responsible for reviewing AI-generated content before using it in a formal assessment, and during a syllabus transition that review includes checking that every question belongs to the syllabus the class is actually studying.
